Olivia Robertson and the Goddess Isis

An Emanation of the Divine Feminine

Throughout history, diverse cultures have revered female deities, recognising their embodiment of fertility, wisdom, nurturing, and power. Among these sacred figures, the Goddess Isis stands out as a profound representation of the Divine Feminine, captivating hearts and minds across the ages. Her multifaceted character, rich mythology, and enduring legacy make Isis a quintessential emblem of femininity, empowerment, and the sacred nature of womanhood.

Historical Context

Isis originated in ancient Egypt, emerging as a prominent deity in the pantheon around 3000 BCE. Initially a local goddess, her influence expanded beyond Egypt to encompass the Greco-Roman world, where she was worshipped as a universal mother and protector. Isis was often depicted as a woman with an elaborate throne-shaped headdress, symbolising her royal status, or with outstretched wings, embodying her role as a nurturer and protector.

The Mythology of Isis

The mythology surrounding Isis is rich and intricate, interweaving themes of love, loss, resurrection, and transformation. She was the sister and wife of Osiris, the god of the afterlife, and her narratives highlight her strength and resilience. When Osiris was murdered by his brother Set, Isis embarked on a perilous journey to retrieve his body, displaying unwavering devotion and fierce determination. This act of love not only signifies the depth of her commitment but also positions her as a symbol of hope and renewal.

Isis’s most significant contribution to mythology is her role in resurrecting Osiris. Through her magical abilities and profound understanding of the mysteries of life and death, she not only brings Osiris back to life but also ensures the continuation of their son, Horus, who embodies kingship and rightful rule. This narrative intertwines themes of regeneration and the cyclical nature of life, resonating deeply with the cycles of nature and the feminine experience.

Symbolism of the Divine Feminine

Isis embodies the archetype of the Divine Feminine in several profound ways. She is often seen as a goddess of fertility, motherhood, and healing, reflecting the nurturing qualities that are traditionally associated with femininity. Her association with the Nile River further emphasises her connection to abundance and sustenance, as the river was essential for agriculture and life in ancient Egypt.

Moreover, Isis’s wisdom and magical prowess symbolize the inner strength that women possess. She represents the idea that femininity encompasses not only nurturing qualities but also intellect, resilience, and the capacity for transformation. In her multifaceted nature, Isis serves as a reminder that the Divine Feminine is not a singular experience but a rich tapestry of attributes that can inspire and empower individuals across cultures and eras.

Modern Relevance

In contemporary society, the figure of Isis continues to resonate with those seeking to reconnect with the essence of the Divine Feminine. As discussions around gender, power, and spirituality evolve, many find solace in the archetype of Isis as a symbol of empowerment and resilience. Women’s movements, spiritual practices, and artistic expressions often draw upon her narrative to evoke themes of strength, transformation, and the reclaiming of feminine power.

The resurgence of interest in goddess spirituality and the celebration of the Divine Feminine also highlight the need for balance in a world often dominated by patriarchal structures. Isis serves as a beacon of hope, encouraging individuals to embrace their inner power, wisdom, and nurturing qualities.

The Goddess Isis stands as a timeless emanation of the Divine Feminine, intertwining the threads of love, loss, resilience, and regeneration. Her rich mythology and profound symbolism continue to inspire individuals in their quest for identity, empowerment, and connection to the sacred aspects of femininity. As we explore the depths of her story, we uncover not only the essence of Isis but also the universal truths that resonate within us all, inviting us to honour and embrace the Divine Feminine in our own lives.

Honouring Olivia Robertson’s Legacy

One of the most influential women of recent times, to promote the worship of the Goddess Isis, was Olivia Robertson. Olivia and I corresponded during the 1990s, during which point, along with the handwritten letters and photos she sent me of herself and others taken at Clonegal Castle, Ireland, she recognised my role with Aurora. I will be forever grateful to Olivia for her support and for all the work she did, as a channel for Isis.

The Fellowship of Isis

The Fellowship of Isis is an international society dedicated to the Goddess Isis, which was co-founded by Olivia Robertson in 1976. Olivia was herself a channel for the Goddess. This spiritual organisation has touched countless lives and has been instrumental in spreading awareness and understanding of the Divine Feminine. When explaining her divine calling Olivia said:

‘It was direct spiritual experience… I had a direct spiritual vocation to do this from God – the feminine aspect of God, God who is also feminine – to emphasize this… the Divine Plan appears to be to emphasize the feminine – charity, kindness, care for nature, nurturing, motherhood – all that side.’ [Source.]

Olivia Robertson was born in Ireland in 1917. Raised in a family that embraced spiritualism and theosophy, she was exposed to a variety of religious beliefs from an early age. Throughout her life, Robertson was known for her literary talent, penning several novels and mythical retellings that incorporated ancient wisdom and metaphysical truths.

In 1976, Robertson, along with her brother Lawrence Durdin-Robertson and his wife Pamela, co-founded the Fellowship of Isis.
