According to BBC reports, Hadush Kebatu has been found guilty on all counts of sexual assault, attempted sexual assault, inciting a child into sexual activity, and harassment with which he was charged. Once he has completed the sentence imposed for these grave offences, it becomes a matter of fundamental natural justice that no legal professional should reasonably put forward an argument for him to be granted asylum, regardless of any claim or circumstance. Such a conviction for serious sexual offences should, by its very nature, preclude any possibility of him finding refuge or protection through the asylum system. We must recognise the harm he’s done to his victims and prioritise the safety and moral expectations of society as a whole.
Let us now hope that the violent protests against innocent asylum seekers and the hostile mood that currently exists towards law-abiding people from ethnic minorities, which negative atmosphere is being generated by some malcontent racist opportunists ends.
Our sympathies are firmly with the innocent victims of Hadush Kebatu, as no doubt they are similarly in the hearts and minds of all well-intentioned people, across all sections of our society.
