Well Done, President Trump!

In a world starved for glimmers of hope amidst intractable conflict, the news of a critical agreement – brokered, we are told, by President Donald Trump between Israel and Hamas – carries immense weight. Should this fragile truce hold, and its intricate conditions be met, then Donald Trump deserves significant commendation for his diplomatic efforts in navigating this treacherous geopolitical landscape.

Crucially, the terms of this potential breakthrough offer an immediate reprieve from the horrific realities on the ground. We are informed that all remaining Israeli hostages, whose captivity has been a source of profound anguish for their families and a nation, are slated for release by Monday. Their return would finally bring an end to an agonising ordeal that has pained the world. Simultaneously, and equally vital, much-needed humanitarian aid is expected to flow into Gaza, a besieged territory where the civilian population is suffering genocide, now on the brink of famine, facing acute shortages of medicine, clean water, and shelter amidst widespread destruction. This influx of aid is not merely assistance; it is a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of defenseless people.

However, this potential step forward must be viewed against the backdrop of the unspeakable tragedy that preceded it. The genesis of this latest chapter of suffering lies in the unprovoked and brutal attack launched by Hamas against Israel. They did not merely unleash violence upon innocent Jewish people; they tragically brought hell upon themselves and, most cruelly, upon the very citizens of Gaza they claimed to represent. The kidnappings, the indiscriminate rocket fire, the killings – these actions guaranteed a devastating response, condemning Gaza’s already vulnerable population to unimaginable suffering.

Indeed, over the last two years, the region has been trapped in a relentless cycle of violence, witnessing the tragic deaths of innocent Israelis and an even greater number of citizens of Gaza. It is a heartbreaking testament to the human cost of conflict that, by some estimates, almost 70,000 people have lost their lives in total during this protracted period of escalating tensions and direct confrontations. Each number represents a person, a family shattered, a future extinguished.

The profound tragedy of it all is that none of this was inevitable; none of it needed to happen. There were alternative paths, diplomatic avenues, and opportunities for de-escalation that were rejected. Hamas, in its fanatical pursuit of destruction and its utter disregard for the lives of both Israelis and Palestinians, has proven themselves to be utterly foolish, blinded by an ideology of extremism.

How truly sad it is to witness how the unbridled hatred of a few individuals, fuelled by radical ideologies and a thirst for unending conflict, has succeeded in costing the lives of so many innocent people. This cycle of violence only perpetuates suffering, eroding any possibility of a peaceful future.

While significant credit, if this deal holds, goes to the principal negotiators, it is also imperative to recognise the persistent and often thankless efforts of other nations. The crucial support provided by Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey in negotiating this delicate agreement cannot be overstated. Their diplomatic channels, regional influence, and tireless behind-the-scenes work have been indispensable in bridging deep divides and guiding all parties towards this precarious moment of potential de-escalation. Their contributions are a testament to the fact that even in the darkest conflicts, dedicated diplomatic efforts can sometimes carve out a path, however narrow, towards peace.

Mr President, please now look to Ukraine with the same kind of determination. You may also bring peace to the beleaguered Ukrainians, who are even now suffering under Vladimir Putin’s brutal onslaught. Thank you.
