Father Gabriele Amorth: The Pope’s Exorcist

Father Gabriele Amorth, the illustrious Italian Catholic priest and exorcist, was a man of great faith and conviction. He dedicated his life to fighting against the forces of evil and is known as one of the most prolific exorcists in the world. His work has inspired many and has brought hope to those who have been plagued by demonic possession.

Born in Modena, Italy in 1925, Father Amorth was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1954. He joined the Society of St. Paul, a religious congregation dedicated to spreading the Gospel through media, and served as its editor for the magazine ‘Madonna.’ However, it was not until 1986 that Father Amorth’s life took a dramatic turn when he was appointed as an exorcist by his bishop.

Father Amorth’s first encounter with exorcism was when he was asked to assist a fellow priest in an exorcism. This experience opened his eyes to the reality of demonic possession and the need for trained exorcists in the Church. He then began to study the works of the great exorcists of the past, such as St. John Vianney and St. Pio of Pietrelcina, and became an expert in the field of exorcism.

Father Amorth believed that the number of exorcisms was on the rise, and he attributed this to the increasing secularisation and lack of faith in the modern world. In his book ‘An Exorcist Tells His Story,’ he stated, ‘The devil is gaining ground because of our disbelief in him.’

Despite facing scepticism and criticism from some within the Church, Father Amorth continued to carry out exorcisms and trained other priests in the practice. He emphasised the importance of spiritual discernment and the need for thorough investigation before performing an exorcism.

Father Amorth’s work as an exorcist was not without its challenges. He faced physical attacks from the demons he was exorcising, and he also received death threats from those who were allied to the dark forces. However, he remained steadfast in his faith and relied on the power of prayer to overcome these obstacles.

One of Father Amorth’s most notable exorcisms took place in 1997, when he was called to exorcise a young woman, known only as ‘Francesca’. She was a 20-year-old university student who had been experiencing demonic possession for over a year. She had been through numerous exorcisms with other priests, but none had been successful in freeing her from the clutches of the demon.

When Father Amorth first met Francesca, he could immediately sense the presence of evil. He described her as having “eyes of fire” and a “face contorted with hatred”. He also noticed that she spoke in a voice that was not her own and had a superhuman strength that was difficult to contain.

The exorcism was a gruelling 40-minute battle between Father Amorth and the demon that possessed Francesca. The demon would not reveal its name and would resist every attempt by Father Amorth to expel it. The young woman would alternately scream, spit, and curse at the priest, but Father Amorth remained calm and steadfast in his faith.

At one point, the demon even spoke through Francesca, mocking Father Amorth and claiming that he had no power over it. But the priest did not falter. He continued to pray and command the demon to leave in the name of Jesus Christ.

After what seemed like an eternity, the demon finally left Francesca, and she collapsed into a state of exhaustion. When she woke up, she had no memory of what had transpired during the exorcism. She was completely free from the possession and was able to resume a normal life.

This exorcism gained widespread media attention and put Father Amorth in the spotlight. Many praised his courage and faith, while others criticised him for perpetuating the belief in demonic possession. But for Father Amorth, it was just another day in his role as an exorcist. He firmly believed in the existence of evil and the power of God to overcome it.

Father Amorth’s most notable exorcism remains a testament to his unwavering faith and dedication to his calling. He showed that even in the face of evil, the power of God can prevail. His legacy lives on, and he will always be remembered as one of the greatest exorcists in the Catholic Church.

Throughout his career, Father Amorth performed tens of thousands of exorcisms and became a sought-after figure for those in need of spiritual help. He wrote numerous books on exorcism and the Catholic faith, including ‘An Exorcist Tells His Story,’ ‘An Exorcist: More Stories,’ and ‘An Exorcist Explains the Demonic.’ Father Amorth also founded the International Association of Exorcists and trained numerous priests in the art of exorcism.

Father Amorth’s dedication and expertise in the field of exorcism gained him international recognition, and he was often invited to speak at conferences and seminars on the subject. He also appeared in documentaries and television programmes, sharing his knowledge and experiences of exorcism with the world.

On September 16, 2016, Father Amorth passed away at the age of 91. His death was mourned by many, including those who had been touched by his work and those who had been helped by his prayers. In his lifetime, Father Amorth had become a symbol of hope for those who were struggling with spiritual afflictions, and his legacy continues to inspire others to this day.
