Near-Death Experiences and an Ancient God’s Council

Throughout history, people from various cultures and backgrounds have reported having near-death experiences (NDEs) and encountering beings of light and councils of light during these experiences. These accounts are often regarded as deeply spiritual or religious in nature, but what many don’t know is that similar records to these experiences can be found in ancient religious beliefs too.

In ancient Mesopotamian mythology, El was the chief god of the pantheon and the father of many other gods and goddesses. He was often depicted as a wise and just ruler who presided over a divine assembly of other deities. This assembly, also known as the “Assembly of the Gods,” played a significant role in deciding the fate of both gods and mortals.

It is not difficult to see how the image of El and his divine assembly corresponds with some accounts of NDEs. The beings of light and the council of light that people encounter during these experiences can be seen as analogous to El and his assembly of gods. Just as the Assembly of the Gods in Mesopotamian mythology would gather to make decisions about the fates of mortals, so too, it seems, the council of light in NDEs are responsible for reviewing the lives of those who have had a near-death experience.

Furthermore, the qualities often attributed to El and his divine assembly – wisdom, justice, and compassion – are also commonly reported in accounts of NDEs. Those who have had these experiences often describe the beings of light as being filled with love and understanding, and the life reviews they undergo are often described as fair and impartial.

Of course, it is important to note that NDEs are highly individualised experiences and can vary greatly from person to person. Nevertheless, the similarities between accounts of NDEs and the mythology of El and his divine assembly are striking and suggest that there may be some deeper, universal truths at play. By exploring these connections, we can gain a greater appreciation for the rich tapestry of human experience and the myriad ways in which the divine has been perceived and understood throughout history.

The ancient god El and his divine assembly offer a fascinating and compelling way to understand accounts of near-death experiences, particularly those involving encounters with beings of light and councils of light. The parallels between NDEs and the mythology of El and his assembly are undeniable and offer a unique perspective on the mysteries of life, death, and the divine.
