Universal passivism, the belief that violence is never justified under any circumstances, is a noble ideal. However, it’s an ideal that’s impossible to achieve in a world where warmongering tyrants exist.
Tyrants are individuals who have seized power through violence and oppression. They are often driven by a lust for power and a desire to control others. They are not interested in peace or compromise. They are only interested in maintaining their own power and expanding their territory.
In the face of such tyrants, universal passivism is a recipe for disaster. If we refuse to use force to defend ourselves, we will simply be allowing them to take over the world. We will be handing them the power to do whatever they want, without any fear of consequences. This is not to say that force is always the answer. There are times when diplomacy and negotiation can be more effective than force. However, there are also times when military action is the only way to stop a tyrant.
For example, consider the case of Adolf Hitler. Hitler was a warmongering tyrant who was responsible for the deaths of millions of people. If the Allies had not used military power to stop him, he would have conquered all of Europe and beyond. The use of force against Hitler was necessary. It was the only way to stop him from carrying out his genocidal plans.
Of course, the use of military force is always a risky proposition. There is always the potential for unintended consequences. However, in some cases, the risks of inaction are far greater than the risks of action. For example, inaction now, in the face of Putin’s aggression could, based on the example of his recent behaviour, embolden him and lead to bigger problems in the near future.
In a world where warmongering tyrants exist, universal passivism is not a viable option. We must be prepared to use force to defend ourselves and our values. We must be willing to fight for what is right, even if it means putting ourselves in harm’s way.
The fight against tyranny is never easy. But it is a fight that we must win. If we do not, the world will be a much darker place.
