We’ve all felt it, or at least heard of it: the uncanny, reassuring tap on the shoulder from a seemingly conscious universe. It’s the moment you think of an old friend, and your phone rings with their number. It’s the serendipitous discovery of the exact book you need at a random flea market. This is the world of synchronicity, a term coined by psychiatrist Carl Jung to describe “meaningful coincidences” that defy the odds of pure chance. Jung’s own famous example—a scarabaeid beetle appearing at his window just as a patient described a dream of one—feels like a cosmic wink, a subtle nod that we are seen, guided, and protected.
These benevolent synchronicities can be more than just comforting; they can be life-saving. For example, in my own life, I once attended a spiritual seminar being held at Camber Sands holiday park, in Sussex. One night, whilst sleeping in my rented campsite mobile home in the early hours of October 16th 1987, I was awoken by surprise to encounter two winged beings hovering above me. They prompted me to get up and move. Shocked, I followed their guidance and dressed, moving into the lounge area. Soon afterwards a hurricane hit, crushing the mobile home, especially the bedroom, whilst I myself was miraculously transported, unharmed, through the large lounge window, floating gently to a place some distance away from the carnage, unharmed, landing in some soft wet grass. Meanwhile, the hurricane roared around me, trashing what was left of the mobile home.
But what if the universe’s whispers aren’t always so kind? What if, for every act of celestial grace, there is a corresponding act of infernal intervention? This is the shadow side of synchronicity, a phenomenon we might call ‘demonic synchronicity’. These are not random bouts of bad luck; they are cruelly engineered sequences of events, where negative cosmic powers appear to conspire with a cold and calculated malice, trapping its victim in a perfect, inescapable tragedy.
Imagine a person walking down a quiet street. They see a child on a bicycle swerve and lose control, heading directly for them. Acting on pure instinct, they leap out of the way to avoid the child. In that precise moment, a car driven by a drunk driver mounts the kerb and strikes the pedestrian. Without the ‘warning’ of the child, they would have been unharmed. The two unrelated events—the child’s wobble and the driver’s intoxication—synchronise perfectly to create a fatal outcome that would not have otherwise occurred. This isn’t just misfortune; it feels like a trap, a meticulously laid snare of circumstance orchestrated by a malevolent intelligence.
Nowhere is this infernal intervention more chillingly suggested than in the story of Adolf Hitler during the First World War. As a young soldier in the trenches, he was sitting with a group of comrades, enjoying a meal. Suddenly, he later recounted, he heard a strange, compelling voice command him to stand up and move to a different spot down the trench. Puzzled but compelled, he obeyed. The moment he left, a stray shell landed directly on his original spot, killing every man he had been sitting with. On the surface, this looks like a miraculous act of providence. But knowing the unimaginable horror that Hitler would unleash upon the world, the source of that saving voice takes on a sinister character. What benevolent power would preserve a life destined for such genocidal evil? The logical, terrifying conclusion is that only an infernal entity, aware of the darkness to come, would intervene to ensure its architect survived.
This forces us to confront a deeply uncomfortable reality. We live in a dualistic cosmos where forces of light and darkness may not just coexist, but actively work to influence human events. Angelic protection might guide a lost hiker to safety, just as a demonic synchronicity might steer a recovering alcoholic past every pub except the one where an old “friend” waits to draw them back into ruin. Both are meaningful, both are timely, but their origins and intentions are polar opposites. One seeks to uplift and protect within a grand, benevolent design; the other seeks to corrupt, ensnare, and fulfill a dark and terrible destiny.
Recognising this is crucial for our own discernment. It asks us to listen more closely to the currents of our lives. Is that impulse to take a different route home a flash of divine inspiration, or a lure into darkness? Is that sudden obstacle a test of our patience, or a demonic synchronicity designed to make us miss a vital opportunity? The answer often lies in the fruit it bears. A positive synchronicity often brings peace, clarity, and life, even if its purpose is not immediately clear. A demonic one, however, often leads to chaos, fear, confusion, and a cascade of negative consequences.
The universe is speaking to us, both in moments of breathtaking grace and in its colder, more calculated cruelties. To believe only in the happy coincidences is to live in a state of wilful naivety. True awareness means acknowledging the full spectrum of reality’s whispers. For in a world where angels can offer a guiding hand, we must be prepared to also recognise the subtle, demonic nudge that guides us toward the edge of a cliff. The devil, as they say, is in the details. And it is in those details—in the precise, cruel timing of a disastrous fate—that his signature may be found.
