America’s Kristallnacht?: Trump’s Dangerous ICE Cops

The brutal, senseless killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in recent days by agents of Trump’s ruthless anti-immigration ICE force bear a chilling resemblance to the infamous Kristallnacht pogroms perpetrated by Nazi Germany’s Gestapo in 1938. As the nightmarish echoes of Kristallnacht reverberate across the United States, a disturbing pattern emerges – a fascist government employing state-sanctioned terror against marginalised communities.

On November 9-10, 1938, Nazi brownshirts and Gestapo agents orchestrated a nationwide campaign of violence against Jewish citizens, destroying thousands of businesses and razing synagogues, whilst killing and brutalising innocent men, women, and children. The following morning, the streets were littered with shards of glass, symbolising the shattered lives and hopes of Germany’s Jewish populace. Kristallnacht, or “The Night of Broken Glass,” marked a stark turning point in Hitler’s ruthless pursuit of a “pure” Aryan race.

Fast-forward to today, where Trump’s ICE, empowered by his anti-immigrant rhetoric, is engaging in similarly reprehensible actions against Latino and immigrant communities. The deaths of Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse, and Renee Good, an activist serving meals to families in need, are harbingers of a darker era unfolding in the United States. These brutal assassinations, carried out by agents sworn to “protect and serve,” smack of the same kind of political persecution and state-sponsored violence that characterised Kristallnacht.

Both Kristallnacht and ICE’s recent atrocities are rooted in a toxic ideology of hate and fear-mongering. Hitler scapegoated Jews for the country’s economic woes, while Trump and his ilk demonise immigrants for perceived threats to American jobs and culture. The result is the same – marginalised groups become scapegoats, and the rule of law disintegrates as fascist policies take hold.

Moreover, the calculating brutality of Kristallnacht’s perpetrators is mirrored in ICE’s apparent callous disregard for human life. As these agencies operate with near-impunity, they send a chilling message to already vulnerable communities: resist at your peril. The deliberate targeting of individuals like Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who championed the rights of the oppressed, is a clear attempt to silence dissent and maintain a climate of terror.

As America teeters on the precipice of a Kristallnacht-like descent into fascism, it is imperative that we recognise the warning signs. We must resist Trump’s xenophobic agenda, hold ICE accountable for its atrocities, and rally around marginalised communities facing unprecedented persecution. The United States must not repeat the catastrophic mistakes of Nazi Germany, where the slide into dictatorship and genocide was enabled by complacency and apathy.

As the broken glass of Kristallnacht still lingers in our collective memory, we must not let the blood of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, along with so many other victims of ICE’s brutality, be in vain. We must stand united against the rising tide of fascism and extremism, and ensure that the democracy that America has for so long claimed to cherish is restored. The future depends on it.

Minessota Representative Ilhan Omar, was attacked with an unknown substance. Anthony James Kazmierczak has been charged. Trump recently wrote about Ilhan Omar, saying she “should be in jail, or even a worse punishment, sent back to Somalia, considered one of the absolutely worst countries in the World. She could help to MAKE SOMALIA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump has also called her a “radical left lunatic”, and “disgusting”. He shouldn’t use such inflammatory language.
