Social Survival: Tribe Over Truth

The result is an information echo chamber, where contradictory data is filtered out before it even reaches our consciousness.

When a jarring fact finally pierces the bubble—perhaps through a news article shared by a friend outside the tribe—it appears not as a neutral piece of evidence but as an abrupt intrusion. The sudden clash feels invasive, like a brick thrown through a window. The mind, already primed for protection, reacts with anger, denial, or ridicule. The hostile response is not merely a personal failing; it is a symptom of a system that has trained us to ignore dissent.

The Irrationality Spiral

All these mechanisms—identity threat, cognitive dissonance, motivated reasoning, tribal loyalty, and echo chambers—conspire to create a spiral of irrationality. Once the defensive mode is engaged, we seek out more confirmation of our stance, often escalating our rhetoric. In the end, anger and hostility toward contradictory information are not signs of irrationality alone; they are the brain’s protective reflexes, honed by evolution, identity, and modern technology. Recognising these reflexes, and gently guiding them toward curiosity instead of combat, may be the most humane way to coax closed minds back into the grand, ever‑expanding library of human knowledge.
