The Age of the Bully: A Strategy for Global Resistance

We are living through a period of profound geopolitical instability, where the post-WWII international order—an architecture built on the fragile promise of sovereignty and rule of law—is being dismantled by two distinct brands of autocracy.

On one side, we witness a resurgence of classic territorial imperialism, with Vladimir Putin attempting to reconstitute the Soviet sphere through the brutal dismemberment of Ukraine and a shadow war of cyber-sabotage. On the other, we see the rise of extractive, expansionist belligerence, where Donald Trump has jettisoned traditional diplomacy in favour of threats against peaceful neighbours and illegal military occupations driven by the insatiable hunger for natural resources.

When the world’s two most powerful bullies operate outside the bounds of human rights and international treaties, the global community cannot simply hope for a return to normalcy. It must forge a new, resilient front. Here is how the world might respond.

Economic Decoupling and Resource Sovereignty

The motive behind the occupation of Venezuela and the war on Iran is starkly transactional: energy dominance. To neutralise such aggression, the world must aggressively accelerate the transition away from fossil fuel dependency.

As long as the global economy is tethered to the volatile, blood-stained wells of occupied territories, bullies will continue to use energy as a weapon of war. By investing in regional renewable grids, nuclear energy, and localised battery storage, non-aligned nations can effectively strip these aggressors of their leverage. When the “natural reserves” become less relevant to the global economic engine, the incentive for territorial invasion diminishes accordingly.

The “League of Neutralism” and Collective Sovereignty

Small nations, such as Greenland, Cuba, and the Baltic states, are currently forced to choose between the orbits of competing superpowers. To counter this, a “League of Neutralism” could be formalised among the Global South and middle-power nations.

By creating a mutual defence and economic pact that rejects the binary choice of aligning with either Washington or Moscow, these nations can create a “sanctuary zone.” If an aggressor threatens one member with invasion or cyber-warfare, the collective response should be a complete, synchronised severance of trade and diplomatic ties. It is a strategy of economic quarantine: if a superpower attempts to bully a smaller neighbour, they find themselves suddenly cut off from the global supply chains they rely on to maintain their own standard of living.

Targeted Transparency and Asymmetrical Accountability

Putin’s influence relies on secrecy, dark money, and the suppression of domestic dissent; Trump’s relies on the manipulation of information and the weaponisation of economic policy. The international community, led by a coalition of investigative journalists, non-governmental organisations, and tech-securing bodies, should shift toward “total transparency.”

This means systematically exposing the offshore wealth of corrupt officials, providing high-bandwidth, encrypted internet access to the citizens of oppressed nations (bypassing state-controlled firewalls), and creating an international body—independent of the UN Security Council—that monitors and publishes real-time data on illegal military movements and human rights abuses. When the curtain of propaganda is pulled back, the domestic support for these bullies often wanes.

The Moral “Cordon Sanitaire”

Diplomacy is often viewed as a utility, but in the face of flagrant crimes against humanity, it must be used as a moral barrier. The world’s democratic nations should adopt a policy of “diplomatic cold-shouldering.” This involves the withdrawal of ambassadors, the exclusion of their representatives from global forums, and the freezing of assets belonging to the leadership inner circles.

It is a message to their home audiences that these leaders are not negotiating partners, but pariahs. When a bully is denied the stage, they are forced to confront the reality of their isolation.

The Path Forward

The challenge posed by such figures is not merely military; it is a test of the global community’s collective spine. History shows that appeasement only feeds the appetite of the expansionist.

The response cannot be a third world war, which would lead to global catastrophe, but a sustained, multi-layered effort to make aggression unprofitable and socially ruinous. By prioritising resource independence, building regional alliances that transcend superpower binaries, and committing to the radical transparency of state crimes, the world can reclaim the narrative.

The bullies rely on the world being fractured and fearful. The most dangerous thing to them is a global consensus that their era, characterised by the raw, violent exercise of power, has officially reached its expiration date.
