President Donald Trump’s commentaries on historical events are marked by manipulative distortions. His recent threat to withdraw the USA from NATO stems from British reluctance to participate in his unauthorised bombing campaign in Iran. Trump unfairly accuses Britain and other nations of not assisting America, while conveniently omitting the fact that the US was the sole country to invoke NATO’s collective defence clause (Article 5), on September 12th, 2001, based on flawed premises put forth by former President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Colin Powell at the time. This misled NATO member states into entangling themselves in a seemingly endless conflict. This glaring hypocrisy serves as further evidence of Trump’s assertions being unfounded and his actions revealing petulant behaviour (which many mental health experts attribute to malignant narcissism), highlighting his propensity for misrepresenting historical facts to support his self-serving agenda.
