A group of more than 100 international law professors and legal experts has issued a formal statement asserting that recent U.S. military actions against Iran violate established international law and may constitute war crimes. According to the letter, the United States failed to meet the rigorous legal standards required to justify the use of force under the United Nations Charter, specifically failing to provide evidence of an “imminent threat” that would authorise a claim of self-defence. The experts argue that by bypassing the UN Security Council and engaging in unilateral strikes without a valid legal basis, the U.S. is undermining the global legal framework designed to prevent unauthorised aggression. Ultimately, the signees contend that these actions set a dangerous precedent that erodes the rule of law and risks destabilising international peace and security.
