Donald Trump’s immigration policy is steeped in hypocrisy. Despite being the son of an immigrant mother and boasting about his own ancestral ties to Germany, he has repeatedly demonised and sought to restrict legal immigration, even advocating for a border wall to keep out those he deems “other.” Yet, this stance ignores the fundamental truth that the United States is itself an occupied territory, stolen from the indigenous peoples – Native Americans – and built upon their land and suffering. Trump’s “America First” mantra conveniently overlooks the historical and ongoing injustices faced by Native communities, who have had their rights, cultures, and very existence marginalised and erased. By embracing a zero-sum approach to immigration, Trump perpetuates a harmful narrative that pits American-born citizens against newcomers, rather than recognising the country’s true history as one of conquest and colonisation. This hypocrisy underscores the need for a more nuanced, equitable, and inclusive approach to immigration and reconciliation with Native peoples.
